Build something in a tab

Four slow-building games
for an evening in one tab

A few evenings are better spent on a plan than on a scramble. These four free-to-play browser games all reward patience: one raises an elegant city of elves or humans, one builds along the Nile, one tends a family farm and one grows an industrial-era town street by street. Each opens in a browser window, and joining any of them costs nothing.

Elvenar key art
01 · City building in a fantasy world

Elvenar

Lead either elves or humans and lay out a fantasy city road by road, from workshops and houses up to vast ancient wonders. A research tree opens one chapter after another, while scouting the provinces nearby and trading goods with neighbours keeps the place expanding.

Good for
Builders who enjoy a tidy layout and an unhurried rhythm.
Typical session

Cost
Free to play, with optional purchases inside the game.
Your first session
  1. Leave gaps between your roads early on, because shifting buildings later is fiddly.
  2. Set workshop jobs to finish around the time you expect to look in again.
  3. Join a fellowship in your first week; trading goods is far easier with one.

Anocris key art
02 · Strategy on the ancient Nile

Anocris

Found a settlement on the banks of the Nile and raise it into a proper city of granaries, quarries and temples. Food, stone and labour all have to balance, and once the economy holds steady you can train troops and push your borders outwards at your own pace.

Good for
Methodical planners who like watching an economy tick over.

Your first session
  1. Get food production comfortably ahead of your population before anything else.
  2. Finish the opening tasks, as they hand over useful materials for nothing.
  3. Scout your neighbours before expanding towards them.

Big Farm key art
03 · Farm management, simulated

Big Farm

Inherit a run-down family farm and turn it into a tidy estate of fields, orchards, barns and small production buildings, all feeding orders from the village nearby. Between the bigger expansions, seasonal events bring brief goals and a few ornaments to place.

Good for
Anyone after something calm to potter with for ten minutes.

Your first session
  1. Sow crops whose timers end near your next likely visit.
  2. Clear village orders first, since they pay for the next barn.
  3. Keep a patch of land empty for the buildings that unlock later on.

Uptasia key art
04 · Build-up with hidden-object scenes

Uptasia

Grow a bright industrial-era town one factory and workshop at a time, funding each new building by finding items in hand-drawn hidden-object scenes. The searching gives the building something to chew through, and the town gradually fills out around you.

Good for
Players who like a sharp eye and steady, visible progress.

Your first session
  1. Work through the early scenes slowly; speed bonuses come with practice.
  2. Spend your first earnings on buildings that produce, not on decoration.
  3. Come back to a scene later, because the items move around each time.

What free to play means on this shelf

Joining all four costs nothing, and you can keep going for months without handing over a cent; no part of the game that matters is walled off behind a payment.

Each studio does keep a shop inside its game, selling premium currency, ornaments or timer skips. Plenty of players never open one, and if other people in the house share your computer it is worth turning on spending limits in the studio account.

The first half hour, start to finish

Press the link under any of the four and that studio's own site opens in a fresh tab. You register there, usually with nothing more than an email address, and your first city, farm or town is ready within a minute or two.

Every one of them starts with a short tutorial sequence. Work through it on the first visit rather than skipping ahead, because it introduces materials, building and co-operation in an order that makes sense.

Fitting them around a full week

All four keep moving while you are elsewhere. Buildings finish, fields ripen and workshops turn out materials with the tab closed, so a glance in the morning and another after supper is plenty.

Short visits are for the housekeeping: collect what is finished, set the next jobs running and reply to anyone on your team. Save the unhurried evenings for the bigger decisions, like a new district, a wonder or a jump in farm size.

Looking after four logins

Every account belongs to the studio behind that game, so only ever type the password on that studio's own pages. Give each of the four a different password, and switch on two-factor security wherever it is offered.

Real support staff will never ask you for a password in a chat window or an email. Treat any offer of free premium currency in exchange for a login as an attempt on the account itself.

What put these four on our shelf

  • Each runs in an ordinary computer browser, so there is no launcher or installer to deal with first.
  • Signing up is free and the whole game stays playable without paying; the in-game shop is there for anyone who wants it.
  • Progress carries on after the window is shut, which means a two-minute look still pushes things along.
  • All four have been running for years, with sizeable communities and studios that keep adding to them.

No. All four open in a standard desktop browser with no extra software.

Yes. Joining costs nothing and all four stay playable for free; the shops inside them are entirely optional.

No. Four separate studios make and run them; our buttons only take you to each official site.

No. Each studio handles its own sign-up, so that is four free registrations.

Timers keep running without you, so looking in twice a day is enough to stay on top of things.

Big Farm, with its gentle pottering. Elvenar and Uptasia are calm as well; Anocris asks the most planning.

Yes. Elvenar has fellowships, Anocris has alliances, Big Farm has co-operatives and Uptasia has guilds.
